Anthem For Doomed Youth: Wilfred Owen

Anthem For Doomed Youth
Poem By: Wilfred Owen

This is a powerful anti war poem. The poem is written from the point of view of some who has the very closed and real experience of the war and the battlefield and who is personally and physically involved in the war. The death soldiers in the field are seen as cattle. It is the loss of the human value. In the first stanza we have many more words related to sound. The dead soldier in the battlefield is not able to get any passing bell. Passing bell is one of the holy items in Christianity. In place of the passing bell, there is the terrible sound coming from guns and rifles. The death soldiers is not able to get prayer which is another holy item of Christianity. At the end of 1st stanza the poet writes that there are no any voices which express sadness over the death of the soldiers. The sound coming from the bugle calls the relatives of the dead soldier's sad house.

The 2nd stanza is full of words related to light. Candle and pall are the other holy item of the Christianity that a deaf person gets. There are no candles in the hands of boys and girls. The death soldiers do not get any pall. The eyebrows of the girls and boys become the ball for the dead soldiers with the eyes full of tears the boys and girl bid farewell to the dead soldiers. They just patiently suffer from the loss of the dead soldiers. The light at the end of the poem changes into the total darkness. The poet is telling us that war is the dark aspect of human history.
