The extract presents the father in two totally different situations. In the first situation, he is coming back from his job in the coal mine. The job in a coal mine is very difficult and it needs a lot of power and force. As the father enters the house, he begins to shout and threaten everyone in the family. The
Children are so terrified that they cannot go even to him. It's seems as if the father is the monster. He is like an unwanted guest and an outsider. Paul is the son who most hates the father. He has recently owned a prize in an essay competition. The mother tells Paul to talk to father about the price. Paul feels that he would have given up the prices rather than to talk to the father. In the first situation the father is presented to us in a very negative way.
The second situation is the off day and the fathers do not have to go to his job. He is an a happier mood, fulfilling the minor household jobs. He is singing out of happiness. The children are also happy and they are helping the father. The father wants them to come near to him and the children also like to go near to the father. In the second situation the father is presented in a very positive way. He is the kind and loving father. The problem with the father is the workload and the adjustment. When he comes back from his job, he is not free from the tension of the workload. That is why he is not able to adjust himself to his family. When he does not have to go to his job, he comes to his true nature.
