Poem By: W.H. Auden
W.H. Auden was inspired to write this poem by the painting of Icarus. The poet derives moral massage from the painting of Icarus made by Bruegel. Icarus was the mythical boy who had an emission to touch the hot sun. He put on wings made out of wax and flew up in the sky. When he went near the sun the wax melted and the boy fell into the sea. At the sea coast their was the farmer working on his land. The farmer might have heard the painful cry of the falling boy. But he did not pay any attention to the falling boy to the farmer it was not the serious event he went on working on his land as if nothing had taken place. There was the ship shelling on the sea. The driver might have seen the falling boy and the passenger might have heard the cry of the falling boy. But the ship did not stop. No attempt was made to rescue the falling boy. The painting of Icarus combines human tragedy and human indifferent. The painting is highly relevant to the modern humanities.
The old masters where the people like Bruegel and they have well understood human tragedy and its central position in human life. The poem then touch about someone eating, someone walking in the street and someone opening the window they are the normal daily human activities tragedy can take place while we are involved in the normal daily activities. Tragedy takes place unexpected the poet makes use of biblical images it takes about the miraculous birth and the dreadful martyrdom they are the birth and the dead of Jesus Christ. Humanities on the hole was indifferent either to birth or the death of Jesus Christ. Only a handful of religious people where censored with the death and the birth of Jesus Christ. Life did not come to an end even when Christ died. Despite the great tragedy the flow of life runs. The poem gives the image of the horse scratching its body on the naked tree it is the symbol of human indifference. The dog goes its doggy life. The image of the horse scratching its body reminds us of the insult and pain Christ got when he was hanged on the cross. At the side of Christ there were two person with spears who scratched the body of Christ.
